Group Courses

Learning English is not just about studying a subject to get a job or a diploma.  It is a powerful means to express yourself. This means sharing your ideas, opinions, and experiences with others who may not speak your own language.

At The Boston School, we feel energized when we can help our students develop their unique voice in English. 

Here are what you can expect for all group courses offered through The Boston School:

Attendance Certificate:

An attendance certificate is issued provided a participant:

  • Attends at least 70% of course
  • Completes at least 70% of all assignments

A test score shall be added to the attendance certificate if participants score 65% or higher on the end-of-semester test

Minimum number of attendees: 2

The Boston School has the possibility to rent rooms in Oerlikon and Uster.  The location of the courses will be determined by the students who register at least 1 week prior to the start of the course.

Our outdoor summer courses will be held in Seebach near The Boston School.

Course Costs:

Costs are based on the total number of class hours and varies according to class size:

  • 2 or 3 participants: CHF 60.00/hour/student  
  • 4 or more participants: CHF 50.00/hour/student
Required Deposit:

A CHF 75.00 non-refundable advance deposit is required to reserve your place.  Full payment per semester is due 3 days prior to the start of the course.  The CHF 75.00 deposit is deducted from the total amount due.  Payment plans may be arranged on request.

For those who prefer having more flexibility with arranging class dates and determining course content, we highly recommend arranging private lessons. 

2021 Outdoor Summer Intensive Courses

Full Immersion Business Vantage Preparation

Intermediate level speakers who wish to reach fluency level for work related matters.

Students who make great progress will be recommended to take the Cambridge English Vantage exam at B2 level. 

Pre-course Grammar & Vocabulary + Speaking Assessment Minimum Score: B1+

2 weeks: 53 hours total

19-30 July 2021

Week 1: Monday-Saturday: 19-24 July

  • 19-23 July: 8:30 – 13:30 (outdoor lunch with teacher)  
  • 24 July: 15:00-18:00: Outdoor sport or movie with snacks

Week 2: Monday – Friday: 26-30 July

  • 26-30 July: 8:30 – 13:30 (lunch with teacher)
  • 29 July, Thursday – full BEC Vantage mock test 
  • 30 July, Friday – final day, issuance of certificate of attendance along with scores to BEC Vantage mock test 

Students will become familiar with all sections of the Cambridge Business English Vantage exam through practice.

They will be encouraged to draw from their own work experiences to take part in role plays of common business meeting and colleague discussion scenarios and presentations. 

Students are expected to speak English only during each class session except during allotted breaks.

Daily writing tasks shall be assigned and completed during class time.

1. Feel prepared to take the Cambridge Business English Vantage exam 

2. Know what sections of the exam you may need additional study time before sitting for the exam 

3. Feel more comfortable speaking and writing in English in a business context as well as making small talk over lunch

4. Improve your business English fluency and understanding of key grammar points

Full-Immersion Conversation Days

Those looking for full-immersion programs in English without traveling abroad.

Pre-Course Grammar & Vocabulary Assessment Minimum Score: A2 

Students will be grouped  together according to pre-course assessment score.

6 hours in 1 day

Choose a day between 15 July – 15 August to spend speaking, listening, walking, eating and reading with a native English speaker

Times: 9:00 – 15:00 or 12:00-18:00


Students itching to be pushed out of their comfort zone to speak English all day will do just that with an experienced English teacher from Boston.  

Topics will be tailored according to the interests of the students : whether that be their hobbies, current events and/or work topics.

Please note: this is also available for individual students.

Students will develop their speaking and listening skills and feel more confidently themselves.

Our Autumn Group Courses are planned to start in October 2021.  However, course start dates will be confirmed only after COVID-19 social distancing restrictions have been officially lifted for the Canton of Zurich.

October 2021 Courses

Advanced English Course

Students working with colleagues or clients who communicate in English as well as those looking to attend university-level English courses in a year’s time will appreciate this course.

Pre-Course Writing Assessment Minimum Score: B2 .

5x 10-week blocks

Tuesdays:  19:00 – 20:30

  • 5, 12, 2, 19, 26 October 2021
  • 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 November 2021
  • 7 December 2021

Study + Interactive Communication: Students will apply what they have studied through relevant, interactive in-class discussions with feedback offered by the teacher during or after each activity. 

Homework: 1-1.5 hours per week  

At the end of each 10-week semester, students should feel ready to push forward to learning more.

By the end of the 50-week course, participants should feel confident to work in an English-speaking team or attend university courses provided in English.

Verb Tense Training

Students who need more guidance on using various tenses they have learned about but need to understand more fully.

The course will cover differences between the following verb tenses:

  • Present Simple and Present Continuous 
  • Past Simple and Present Perfect Simple
  • Present Perfect Simple and Continuous Forms
  • Similarities between verb tense formations and uses: all simple and all continuous forms
